Response to Drug Reduction Proposal by Oregon Sheriffs and Police Chiefs

The Clackamas County District Attorney’s office received no advance notice of the proposal by the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association and the Oregon Association of Police Chiefs to reduce crimes involving drug possession including heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine to misdemeanors. There were no advance discussions about this concept, neither its purpose nor the possible consequences of such a policy.

Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion Program (LEAD) Slated To Begin In Clackmamas County

The Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office, working in conjunction with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Health, Housing and Human Services, and Central City Concern are scheduled to begin the new Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion Program (LEAD) in January 2019. LEAD is a pre-charging diversion program that seeks to reduce future criminal behavior by individuals involved in low level drug offenses in a targeted geographical area that has a higher population of the chronically homeless.

Jefferson County Corrections Deputies Acquitted of Criminally Negligent Homicide

At the request of Jefferson County District Attorney Steven Leriche, the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office reviewed a case submitted by the Central Oregon Major Crimes Team involving three Jefferson County Corrections Deputies. A Jefferson County grand jury considered the evidence, and on April 4, 2018 returned indictments charging each deputy with criminally negligent homicide for their respective roles in the death of inmate James Wippel. Mr. Wippel had been arrested on April 24th, 2018 by Warm Springs Police on drug charges. While in custody, Mr.

Clackamas County Senior Deputy District Attorney Rusty Amos Received the "Above and Beyond"

On January 11th, 2019 Clackamas County Senior Deputy District Attorney Rusty Amos received the “Above and Beyond” award for his efforts in the anti-human trafficking movement. Given by the Oregon Department of Justice to the Deputy District Attorney who “has shown tremendous character and heart when fighting for justice against perpetrators and when working with victims of trafficking,” Senior DDA Amos was instrumental in developing a human trafficking mutli-disciplinary team for Clackamas County that promoted a victim centered, multi-agency collaboration to combat human trafficking.
