Clackamas County Library (Oak Lodge & Gladstone branches) seeks motivated and enthusiastic individuals with strong customer service and communications skills to join our team as on-call Library Assistants. This is a unique opportunity as we will be filling multiple vacancies. If selected for the Library Assistant position, your primary responsibilities will be to explain the online catalog and library classification system, answer basic reference questions, and assist patrons in using library materials and services.
The Oak Lodge and Gladstone Libraries provide informational, recreational, community, and cultural services to the public, such as accessing publicly funded diverse materials and services, as well as achieving their individual goals.
Role and Responsibilities
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists patrons in using library materials and services and in their selection of materials; explains the use of the online catalog and the library classification system; checks books in and out; accepts and collects fines; processes new library cards; answers basic reference questions.
- Assists in processing new books, periodicals, and other printed materials; shelves books and assists in implementing circulation procedures; provides suggestions for material selection; maintains online system data, files, and other clerical records related to the library.
- Conducts bibliographic searches for interlibrary loan requests; processes items to be mailed or picked up by courier; mends damaged materials; assists in keeping the library facilities clean and orderly; opens and closes deposit site locations.
- Serves on committees to improve library services; assists with special library programs and services.
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of three (3) years of related experience providing direct customer service with the public
- Experience working in a library environment
- Knowledge of library methods, procedures, practices and terminology
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience interpreting and applying rules and standards of the County library system and the consortium
- Experience with the Dewey Decimal classification system
- Experience with the Symphony library software system
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Bilingual (Spanish or Russian) preferred
Pre-employment Requirements
- Must successfully pass a criminal history check which may include national or state fingerprint records check.
- Must successfully pass a post-offer physical assessment.
- Driving may be necessary for County business. For position(s) with occasional/incidental driving, incumbents must possess a valid driver's license. Accommodation requests for an acceptable alternative method of transportation will be reviewed on an individual basis in compliance with State and Federal legislation. Work Hours: Currently, the libraries are open Monday-Saturday and are closed on Sundays. Saturday and evening availability is required. This position is on-call and does not have a regularly set schedule. Specific hours of work will be discussed with the candidate selected for the position at the time an offer of employment is extended.
