Dental Hygienist – On Call

Clackamas County's Health Centers Division - Dental Care Program is looking for an On Call Dental Hygienist to provide clinical dental hygiene services for the dental program at our various dental clinic locations. Our health centers are Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that offer primary care, dental services and behavioral healthcare at multiple integrated health centers and school-based health centers. We currently have dental clinics located in Oregon City, Clackamas, Gladstone, and Sandy. This is a unique opportunity to work closely in an integrated health clinic that promotes whole body health in our communities!

Typical tasks:

Routine Tasks:

  • Provide clinical dental hygiene services, including prophylaxis, scaling and root planning, periodontal maintenance fluoride application, sealant placements, etc. through a trauma informed care lens.
  • Instruct and demonstrate proper oral hygiene and dental health practices to patients, promoting interest in the prevention of dental disease.
  • Take, electronically mount, and file dental x-rays using Epic and MiPacs.
  • Assist dentists with routine exams and problem-focused limited exams.
  • Sharpen, clean, and sterilize dental instruments and portable dental sealant equipment.
  • Maintain dental equipment and ensure dental rooms are orderly, clean, and well-stocked.
  • Order, store, and maintain office and dental supplies and equipment.
  • Review dental program protocols, policies, and procedures for compliance and effectiveness annually, as assigned, and as needed for clinical competency.
  • Assist the dental clinic with breaking down team members' rooms and maintaining central sterilization whenever possible.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments based on treatment plans and patient needs, make confirmation calls, conduct outreach to patients for program metrics, and monitor Epic in-basket as needed.

Non-Routine Tasks:

  • Work with dental students, dental assistants, and dental hygiene externs, participating in their training related to dental hygiene roles and responsibilities.
  • Participate in school-based health center assessments and hygiene services as needed.
  • Participate in WIC assessments, nutrition counseling, oral hygiene instruction, and fluoride varnish application as needed. 

Minimum qualifications

The following licensure/certifications are required at the time of hire: 

  • License to practice dental hygiene in the state or Oregon (RDH)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate
  • Local Anesthesia endorsement

Preferred qualifications

  • Nitrous Oxide permit

Schedule

As needed Monday through Friday. Hours may vary: Monday & Friday 8am-5pm. Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday 8am-5pm or 10am-7pm. This position is designated as on-site/in-person.
