Syphilis

Syphilis can happen to anyone- but free testing and treatment is available in Clackamas County

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is becoming more common in Oregon

Anyone can get syphilis, and you can have it and not know it. If you have syphilis and don’t get treated, it can lead to serious health problems. If you have syphilis when you’re pregnant, you can give syphilis to your baby.

Syphilis can be treated with medicine (antibiotics) from a doctor. It’s easier to treat in the early stages, so it’s important to get tested, especially if you are or could be pregnant.

Congenital syphilis

If someone gets syphilis when they’re pregnant, they can give syphilis to their baby during pregnancy or childbirth. This is called congenital syphilis. It can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth or serious health problems for the baby.

It’s important for pregnant people to be tested for syphilis so it can be treated as soon as possible. Early treatment can help keep a baby healthy. Pregnant people should be tested for syphilis three times during their pregnancy, once per trimester. Syphilis is treatable. Getting treated for syphilis with weekly medicine (antibiotics) while pregnant is safe and effective.
