The second annual Clackamas County Youth Bike Safety Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 15. School-age children and their families are welcome to drop by any time between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the west parking lot of the Clackamas Community College Harmony Campus, 7738 Harmony Road, Milwaukie.
This free event, sponsored by Clackamas County Safe Routes to School, includes lots of fun activities for learning about bicycle safety, including safety skills courses, program and transportation safety information, bicycle maintenance checks and a bike decorating station. Safety Street will also be there to give children the chance to practice being safe in cars with crossing signs, speed limits and traffic.
No pre-registration is required for the event; people are invited to just show up any time within the three-hour period. Free bike accessories (helmets, lights, bells, bags) will be available while supplies last.
The Clackamas County Safe Routes to School program works to increase the number of students biking and walking to school by providing safer walking, bicycling and riding routes. The program engages with community members, schools and other organizations to educate school-aged children about safe walking and biking practices and provide engineering improvements such as crosswalks, signage and sidewalks around schools.
Youth Bike Safety Day is co-sponsored by The Street Trust, an organization that advocates for transportation options that prioritize safety, accessibility, equity, and climate justice in the Portland Metro Region.
