Today is World Toilet Day! While it is easy to take having access to a toilet for granted, we should remember that a toilet is much more than a daily convenience, it is a lifesaver and a protector of dignity.
Billions of people around the world live without safely-managed sanitation.
A lack of access to adequate sanitation causes hundreds of thousands of deaths every year due to diseases carried by dirty water. Children under the age of five are especially vulnerable. Inadequate sanitation systems also spread human waste into rivers, lakes, and soil.
Here in Clackamas County, Clackamas Water Environment Services treats and cleans seven billion gallons of wastewater annually for nearly 200,000 people.
Clackamas Water Environment Services produces clean water, protects water quality and recovers renewable resources. We do this by providing wastewater services, stormwater management, and environmental education. It's our job to protect public health and support the vitality of our communities, natural environment and economy.
