CCSO Case # 24-023222

On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office located a man who had been reported missing while hunting for mushrooms in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Nathan Kelly, age 40 of Sandy, was last seen Sunday evening in the wilderness east of SE Wildcat Mountain Drive, southeast of Sandy.

Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue coordinators launched an extensive search Sunday evening, November 3rd, after receiving a report Nathan and a friend had become separated in the dense forest terrain. Deputies mobilized Clackamas Search and Rescue (CSAR) volunteers to join the effort, forming multiple teams of ground searchers who began working in the area that same evening.

On Monday, additional volunteer teams arrived to support the search, along with the deployment of drones, to aid in surveying difficult-to-reach areas.

The search area was characterized by dense forest and challenging, steep terrain, which complicated rescue operations. Weather conditions were poor during the search with periods of high winds, heavy rain, and hail. Temperatures dropped at night, increasing the urgency of the search.

Nathan was located Tuesday morning as he was walking out of the Eagle Creek Trail and onto SE Harvey Rd where searchers from Portland Mountain Rescue were arriving to deploy. Nathan was cold and wet, but otherwise in good condition.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Portland Mountain Rescue (PMR), Mountain Wave Emergency Communications, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, the Hood River Crag Rats, and the AMR Reach and Treat team.
