Shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2024, Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputies were notified by dispatch that Portland Police Bureau’s (PPB) air unit was tracking a suspected stolen vehicle into Clackamas County that had been driving recklessly and attempting to elude officers. The vehicle entered into the Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center’s parking structure located at 10180 SE Sunnyside Road, Clackamas.
Deputies and a PPB unit arrived and located the suspect vehicle, a white Kia Sportage with three people inside. The vehicle began ramming multiple responding patrol vehicles. The driver was shot by a deputy. No deputies or officers were hurt. The passengers in the suspect vehicle were uninjured.
Deputies began life-saving measures and the driver was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in stable condition.
The suspect vehicle was later determined to be stolen.
The involved deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, according to policy.
In accordance with standard protocol, the investigation is being led by the Clackamas County Interagency Major Crimes Team in collaboration with the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office. Detectives from Canby and West Linn are leading the Major Crimes Team’s investigation with assistance from Milwaukie, Molalla, and Oregon State Police detectives.
